Summary:
While support for open access journal articles has accelerated such that over 50% of publications are now publishing open access, there is much progress still to be made to create a more open ecosystem for books. In particular, with monographs a core part of humanities and social science research, many areas of disciplinary knowledge will be left more inaccessible without support for open access books. Newer models that take a collective approach have had a greater impact on speeding up the shift to open access, but it often feels progress is slow. Why do open books matter and how do we move forward more quickly?
In this session we’ll hear from the library and publisher perspective. Debra Bucher, Head of Collections & Discovery, Vassar College Libraries, will talk about the ways OA books support has developed and the direction of travel. Amy Harris from the MIT Press and Emily Farrell from Taylor & Francis will discuss the evolution of open access books models at their presses, their experiences building and launching new models, as well as lessons learned in the process that will help move towards an open books future.
