Maximizing existing collections: How can academic librarians help students use legacy digital collections for contemporary research?
Summary:
Research priorities change and evolve, but long-established digital library collections remain as relevant as ever, and “legacy” collections continue to be rediscovered and reinterpreted by a new generation of students and scholars. For example, twenty years after the original launch of Eighteenth Century Collections Online, the collection continues to fuel new scholarship as research shifts towards topics like gender and finance.
Attendees will hear perspectives from experts at the British Library and award-winning teaching faculty at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) to gain practical strategies for promoting library resources on campus and supporting faculty across disciplines. In addition, attendees will learn how to position legacy collections as strategic tools for contemporary scholarship and student success.

Dr. Amy Froide
Professor of History, University of Maryland, Baltimore County and author of Silent PartnersAmy M. Froide is Professor of History at the University of Maryland Baltimore County and currently serves as the Director of the Dresher Center for the Humanities. She specializes in early modern British and women’s history. She is the author of Silent Partners: Women as Public Investors during Britain’s Financial Revolution, 1690-1750 (Oxford University Press, 2016). Her other books include Never Married: Singlewomen in Early Modern England (Oxford University Press, 2005) and Singlewomen in the European Past, 1250-1800 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1999), co-edited with Judith M. Bennett. Prof. Froide was the recipient of the 2018 Maryland Board of Regents’ Award for Teaching Excellence and is currently UMBC’s Presidential Teaching Professor for 2024-27.

Head of Printed Heritage CollectionsThe British LibraryDr. Karen Limper-Herz is Head of Printed Heritage Collections at the British Library in London. She is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Honorary Secretary and the Senior Vice-President of the Bibliographical Society in London. She is a faculty member of Rare Book School (RBS) at the University of Virginia, a trustee of the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel, a member of the organizing committee of the Arbeitskreis für die Erfassung, Erschließung und Erhaltung historischer Bucheinbände (AEB) in Berlin, and a member of the Wolfenbüttel Working Group for the History of Libraries, Books and Media.
