How can librarians use documentaries to partner with faculty and support student learning and curricula?

Summary:

On college campuses around the world, a multitude of topics are researched daily. Search trends indicate what you would expect. You find trending subjects such as AI, alongside more conventional topics like health/medicine and psychology/mental health, where ongoing research remains prominent. 

In this webinar we’ll discuss how these timely research topics can be explored through documentary films and brought to life in a variety of courses. We’ll also spend time learning how libraries can leverage films to help connect their library content to the faculty they support. 

This session will feature 30 minutes of panel discussion and 30 minutes of Q&A conversation on library/faculty collaboration.

• Explore documentaries on popular research topics: iHUMAN (AI), The Invisible Extinction (Health/Medicine), and Resilience: The Biology of Stress & the Science of Hope (Psychology) and their applications in a variety of courses 
• Learn, from educational expert Fran Sterling (Blueshift Education), how to assist faculty in deriving insights from documentaries to support curriculum and encourage learning
• Share ideas on how to encourage collaboration with faculty to support lectures and student learning using documentaries

Elinor Kowarsky

Elinor Kowarsky is a renowned documentary producer and one of Israel’s leading figures in the field. She has produced and created numerous internationally acclaimed documentary films. Previously, she served as the Commissioning Editor for the Documentary Division of Channel 2 in Israel and led the Entrepreneurial Producing Program at the Sam Spiegel Film and Television School in Jerusalem.

Scott Spicer

Scott Spicer is the Media Outreach Librarian for the University of Minnesota Libraries. In this role, he serves as head of Libraries Media Services, a program dedicated to supporting course-integrated student media projects and media resources, emphasizing media literacy skill set development and authentic learning experiences. Scott is a frequent presenter and scholar in several areas related to media in education. He book, Student-Created Media: Designing Research, Learning, and Skill-Building Experiences (ALA Editions, 2022), has received critical acclaim from several reviewers. He holds an MLIS from Dominican University & an MA in Curriculum and Instruction (Learning Technologies) from the University of Minnesota.

Fran has joyfully worked in education for her career, first as a History and Civics teacher in middle and high school before working for the international education non-profit Facing History and Ourselves as a regional director, curriculum writer, and facilitator of professional development and community conversations. Today she’s the Director of Education for Life Stories, a division of the Kunhardt Film Foundation, and Director of Blueshift Education where they develop film-tailored curriculum, guides, advocacy toolkits, and interactive platforms to deepen knowledge and empower action. She received a degree in Politics from Mount Holyoke College, a Master’s Degree in Education/Curriculum and Design from the University of Colorado, a diploma in Jewish Studies from the Oxford Center for Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and completed her PhD coursework in Cultural Studies and History from Claremont Graduate School.
