WHITE PAPER: Building an AI Literacy Framework

LTI announces its first white paper

From its beginning, LibTech Insights has advocated for the centrality of librarians in emerging discussions around generative AI and AI literacy. We have published think pieces on the state of the profession in the wake of AI, highlighted new AI tools, run webinars on prompt engineering and citation, positioned AI and information literacy in the composition classroom, studied the use of AI as a research tool, developed a guide for answering students’ questions about AI, warned of bias, and more.

We’re happy to announce that Choice and LibTech Insights have published a white paper developed by Sandy Hervieux and Amanda Wheatley, two librarians from McGill University with extensive experience in AI and librarianship (long before the wave of generative AI), that offers an innovative framework for AI literacy. “Building an AI Literacy Framework: Perspectives from Instruction Librarians and Current Information Literacy Tools” integrates interviews with many librarians on the ground who are teaching AI and AI literacy to highlight the shortcomings of current models and the needs a new one must address. This free white paper, underwritten by Taylor & Francis, achieves three goals:

• Determines the perspectives of instruction librarians on AI literacy
• Evaluates current literacy frameworks for their ability to adapt to the landscape of artificial intelligence
• Creates a robust AI literacy framework

Readers will leave with a new and important framework for both professional and pedagogical use.
