If forced to choose one word that describes this book, it would be “useful.” The authors avoid scintillating arguments in favor of synthesizing and presenting the knowledge of cybersecurity to date. One example is their discussion of how corporations use internet technology. They point out that business spending on cyber technology has long ago eclipsed government spending. Further, they acknowledge that corporations have not done a stellar job of protecting individual privacy and free speech. Instead of bashing corporate motives and misjudgements, the authors offer a balanced assessment of whether government regulation or corporate policy will govern the internet. The book lives up to the claims made in its preface by providing a framework for thinking about cyberspace. Students will find this book an efficient way to assess the scale and scope of the field and determine where they stand on the issues. Experienced scholars and practitioners will find the book’s discussion of conventional cyber definitions and concepts helpful. The cyber technology, policy, and security field has become so large and sprawling that it is timely for someone to pull it together.
