December’s series featured Kait Pinder of Acadia University and Joel Deshaye of Memorial University, the coeditors of The Contemporary Leonard Cohen: Response, Reappraisal, and Rediscovery. Taking a critical lens to Cohen’s creative works, personal life, and politics, our guests walked through their respective chapters in the book and the genesis of the project. Kait and Joel also underscored Cohen’s enduring legacy and political presence, best encapsulated in Kate McKinnon’s 2016 SNL performance of “Hallelujah” in the aftermath of Donald Trump’s election and Cohen’s death. In addition, they spotlighted songs by modern artists boygenius and Lana Del Rey that allude to Cohen in their lyricism. Listen to the series.
