For Publishers

Choice reviews current titles appropriate for libraries that serve students at the undergraduate level, including community colleges. We selectively review graduate-level materials that have value for advanced undergraduates or honor students. In addition to academic titles, we review selected trade titles that address subjects relevant to undergraduates and a reading public that shares an interest in scholarly resources. We do not review strictly professional works, reprints, textbooks, or foreign-language materials. Choice reviewers are teaching faculty and reference librarians based in North America.

Choice maintains a profile with most academic and trade publishers, and they send their titles automatically, based on our profile. This ensures that all appropriate titles come to our attention. We also request particular titles that appear to be appropriate for review. Publishers should send finished books to the following address:

Choice welcomes seasonal catalogs and prepublication announcements.  Our editors frequently request copies based on these descriptive materials.

Publishers wishing to have their materials considered for review should read our Selection Policy.

Books are distributed by Library of Congress classification and evaluated for review by our subject editors. We select for review books that merit the attention of undergraduates and the librarians and faculty who serve them. Reviews are published in Choice according to an established disciplinary hierarchy. Increasingly publications are interdisciplinary, and Choice editors do their best to place reviews to best advantage.

Choice’s Editor and Publisher is Bill Mickey, and the subject editors for all disciplines, including the humanities, social and behavioral sciences, STEM, and reference, are Fatima Mohie-Eldin and Daniel Pfeiffer.

Owing to the high volume of materials, Choice is able to review only 25 to 30 percent of the titles submitted. Choice does not pay for materials submitted for review. Materials submitted become the property of Choice and will not be returned.

• Please send review copies as soon as they are available. We review current materials only.
• When a book appears simultaneously in hardcover and paper, please send the hardcover.

Choice will send publishers copies of reviews about two months prior to publication in print. However, as soon as reviews are edited, they are posted online to Choice Reviews, where subscribers to CR can access them immediately.

Permissions

Choice reviews are the property of the American Library Association. They may be excerpted (up to 50 percent of the text) at no fee. They may be reprinted in full, with an ALA copyright notification, by permission only. The fee for reprints is $100 per review per instance. The following copyright notice must appear with a excerpts and reprints: Reprinted with permission from CHOICE http://www.choicereviews.org, copyright by the American Library Association. To request reprint/s please send a check for the appropriate amount to the address below, indicating the review/s that the check covers. Forthcoming Titles

Every year Choice publishes 11 subject-specific forthcoming lists. Choice’s forthcoming titles lists offer publishers the opportunity to bring their new print and electronic titles to the attention of thousands of faculty and librarians, including academic library buyers. To be considered for inclusion, titles must be scheduled for publication in the month the list appears, or later. Submitted titles must be suitable for academic libraries. New editions, revisions, and electronic publications are all appropriate for forthcoming lists.

Choice Reviews Rating System
 
Every title and resource reviewed in Choice is given a zero- to four-star rating that corresponds with recommendation levels ranging from “Not Recommended” to “Essential”. The star icons appear in the print version of Choice Reviews, but not in the Choice Reviews Online database. The print and digital versions both include the recommendation levels. When considering the individual rankings, it’s helpful to remember that they result from a critical evaluation of how well a title comports to an undergraduate level of study specific to an academic setting. Titles are not reviewed against the backdrop of a general readership. The ranking system works as follows:
 
Zero stars: Not Recommended
One star: Optional
Two stars: Recommended
Three stars: Highly Recommended
Four stars: Essential

Choice Outstanding Academic Titles

The Outstanding Academic Titles (OATs) list, one of Choice’s most highly anticipated features, appears every year in the December issue. All books reviewed in the calendar year (January-December issues) are eligible for distinction as an OAT. Selected by Choice editors, OATs are noteworthy for their outstanding contribution to the academic literature. Choice notifies individual publishers about their titles selected.
